"Mnohaya Lita!" or Ukrainian Version of “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow”

“Mnohaya Lita!” (“Many Years!” or “Long Life!”) it is a Ukrainian song, which is sung to a person (or people) for special occasion, like a birthday, a Name Day, a wedding, a birth of child, a warming house or a great achievement in life. Many sources explain a value of the “Mnohaya Lita!” as equivalent to the “Happy Birthday to You” or “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”. I would say, that “Mnohaya Lita!” is more close to the “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow”, than to the “Happy Birthday to You”. Of course, people in Ukraine are singing the “Mnohaya Lita!” to a birthday person, but here is a video of the wedding in Western Ukraine where guests are singing the “Mnohaya Lita!” to the bride and groom.

Ukrainians usually sing a “Mnohaya lita!” not for newlyweds only, but for their parents and for special guests at a wedding.
